Health and Safety Audits and Training packages for Retailers.

April 2016

The business challenge

A well known cosmetic brand, with 6 boutiques located across the UK and Scotland, initially requested fire warden training for their 40 staff.  This was a recommendation highlighted in fire risk assessments carried out on behalf of the head office located in London.  The Boutique Managers and Area Managers meet there every three months to discuss all aspects of the how the boutiques are operating, changes to company procedures and general staffing issues.

The National Retail Sales Director invited Adele to deliver Fire Warden Training in the London Office, to all 6 of the Boutique Managers and relevant Area Managers. During a pre-training meeting with the Sales Director it was established that each store manager holds responsibility for the staff employed within their boutique and for arranging premises maintenance etc. Some of the boutiques are sited within shopping centres and therefore have assistance of Shopping Centre Management teams, whereas others are located in the high street and have no support with situations such as with fire evacuation procedures, first aid assistance etc.  The emergency evacuation procedures for each store vary greatly.

The Project

Before the Fire Warden Training took place, the National Sales Director asked Adele to visit each of the boutiques to evaluate the workplace hazards and current working procedures.  Adele visited each of the six nationwide locations to carry out workplace inspections, looking at issues such as:

Following each premises visit a Workplace inspection report was written highlighting any H&S non-compliances with recommendations for improvements as identified at each location.  The reports were issued to both Boutique Manager and to the Head Office.  At the end of all visits the National Sales Director was provided with a summary report highlighting the main issues found within the boutiques that needed to be addressed by the Management Team and a company as a whole.

Adele worked with the National Sales Coordinator to provide H&S procedures to be inserted into the Company Handbook and also updates to the company H&S Policy.  At the end of this preparation she then delivered H&S training from the London office to all Boutique Managers, deputy Managers and Regional Sales Managers.  The National Sales team also attended.  Staff were issued with the revised Company Handbook and provided with information to train their own staff.

How has this proved its’ worth

The Boutique Managers all received a Health and Safety Manual and bespoke administration pack to put consistent induction measures and store monitoring procedures in to place.  The company addressed a common problem that Managers had faced, due to no Service Maintenance arrangements being in place outside of normal office hours.  Emergency contact agreements were initiated with maintenance firms providing the BoutiqueManagers with support during evening and weekend opening times.  The Boutique Managers now have a better knowledge of their H&S responsibilities and how to apply these to protect themselves, their staff and members of the public from risk of injury.  For the boutique staff, the workplace inspection highlighted some consistent failings due to lack of washroom facilities in some locations, drinking water and restroom facilities which resulted in the company refurbishing boutiques to meet basic H&S legislative requirements.

The National Sales Director receives ongoing support from us to ensure that all workplace refurbishment projects are compliant with H&S legislation.
